David Ryan is a visual artist and musician. He is particularly interested in experimental music and has worked in various groups and ensembles as well as exhibiting visual work that includes film and painting. Collaborations include working with composers and musicians such as Christian Wolff, Earle Brown, John Tilbury, Eddie Prevost, Rhodri Davies, Ian Mitchell, John Edwards and many others. He has also been featured in numerous festivals including Huddersfield Festival, UK, 2001/2002/2008, Nuova Consanova, Rome, Italy 2009, and Namusica, Naples, Italy 2013, as well as being broadcast on Danish Radio, BBC Radio 3 and a forthcoming broadcast for Sky Italia Classica TV.

This talk will focus on the exhibition ‘Drawing Towards Sound: Visualising the Sonic’. It will position ‘classic’ experimental and avant-garde notations – such as Cage and Cardew – with the output of contemporary composers, visual artists and filmmakers. As well David Ryan’s own practice, this talk will look at general issues around the processes of notation, their histories and potential relevance today.
