Dr Helena Rivera is a visiting lecturer in Landscape Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Greenwich. She was awarded her PhD in Regional Planning in 2015 at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL, where her research focused on applying transferable lessons from British New Towns into contemporary housing policy. She is a professionally qualified architect, chartered by the ARB and RIBA, and is founder and director of A Small Studio Ltd. Helena undertakes work in both a professional and academic capacity related to architecture and urbanism out of her studio in London. Helena has collaborated with The Urban Institute, School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS), Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK and at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh on multiple projects in the Global South. The most recent project, ‘Neighbourhood based landslide risk mitigation using WhatsApp and community-state dialogue’ was shortlisted by The Times Higher Education Awards as International Collaboration of the Year in 2019. She has recently been a visiting guest at the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on New Towns, 2018-2019.

A Small Studio is an architecture practice specialising in site-specific and responsive projects that are thoughtfully designed. The studio is based a former Pye Electronics building in South London and its work has been published amongst others by Dezeen, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The Architects Journal, Dwell magazine, Cities and Ecology and Society. A Small Studio works in research, architecture, landscape and urbanism specialising in projects that respond creatively to their context. With a commitment to design, detailing and materiality.  Being small means the studio is flexible. Although the core team is made up of chartered architects, professional researchers and a material specialist, the studio is used as a platform to work with other professionals and frequently collaborates with makers, builders, artists, landscape architects, filmmakers and writers. Both Helena Rivera and Kalliopi Bouzounieraki of A Small Studio teach a design unit in Landscape Architecture and Urbanism at undergraduate level (BA) in The University of Greenwich. A Small Studio is one of the selected London practices in the RIBA mentoring scheme for university students.

The Landscapists Seminars are weekly online conversations with leading designers and researchers working with landscape. Hosted by Ed Wall, they provide insights into unique project approaches, techniques and methods from around the world.

For future seminars, see here. We don’t record them so listen carefully, make notes, and come back each week!

The seminars are generously supported by Wiley and School of Design, University of Greenwich, London.

The Landscapists: The title and theme of the seminars have been developed from The Landscapists: Redefining Landscape Relations, an issue of Architectural Design (AD) edited by Ed Wall and published by Wiley in early 2020.
